Solar module manufacturer Avancis has kick-started construction of its second plant at Torgau in the German state of Saxony with a symbolic ground-breaking ceremony. Construction work is proceeding at record speed, with diggers rolling onto the construction site a mere two weeks after the decision to build the plant was taken.
"We have thoroughly prepared for this project and have set an ambitious schedule,’ confirmed Hartmut Fischer, the CEO of Avancis, at the ground-breaking ceremony. The new-build project on the 25,000 m² site is due to be completed within the next 18 months. The company intends to start manufacturing the third generation of innovative solar modules here as early as the first quarter of 2012. With an overall manufacturing capacity of 100 MW p.a., the new site will be five times the size of the existing plant.
Andrea Staude, Torgau’s mayor, congratulated the builders on their successful start and expressed her delight at the expansion: "With the second solar plant, Avancis is underlining its commitment to the region and playing its part in securing the future of Torgau as a glass centre. We are very happy with the way the company is growing and the proposed jobs,’ she explained on the construction site. The number of employees Avancis is looking to take on at its second site will be in three figures. Details of current vacancies can be found online www.avancis.de under the ‘Careers’ section.
Avancis commissioned its first plant in Torgau in October 2008 and currently employs 150 people at this site alone. A further 50-strong team in the fields of research and development and plant planning is also based in Munich. The new building will be constructed along the same lines as the existing plant.
