三星电子宣布公司计划扩大太阳能电池片产能，预计到2011年上半年，公司太阳能电池片产能将增加100兆瓦，即是目前产能的4倍还多。

Samsung Electronics Co. will more than quadruple the capacity of its pilot solar-cell production line by the first half of next year, a company spokesman said.

Suwon, South Korea-based Samsung started a 30-megawatt solar-cell production line for research and development last September and will incrementally increase capacity to 130 megawatts next year, company spokesman James Chung said today.

Samsung hasn’t decided when it will begin selling solar cells, Chung said, responding to a Seoul Economic Daily report yesterday that the company will start commercial production by the first half of next year.

The company’s parent, Samsung Group, in May announced a plan to spend 23.3 trillion won ($20 billion) on expanding into health care, solar batteries and other areas related to renewable energy. Samsung Electronics will invest 6 trillion won in solar-cell production by 2020 as part of the initiative.
